How is a person supposed to know when a watch is worth what someone is charging for it, or if it is something that has no value at all. They could be real, but they might be luxury watch imposters. No one could actual charge that suggested price and never would even attempt to. How can they sell them so cheap? They are just not well made. There are laws in place that deal with this method of advertising, but many companies either get around them or ignore them completely. The only way for someone to make sure that they are buying the watch that they expect to is by doing some research and shopping at a reputable dealer when they are looking for something to put on their wrist.
A couple of obvious clues will help someone determine if a watch is a cheap copy or not. No real luxury watch sells new for a street, catalog or Internet price of under $250. No real luxury watch sells new for more than 50% off of its genuine retail price, even from the most aggressive discount dealers. No real luxury brands are ever sold at fire sales, massive inventory clearances or end of model year closeouts. A real luxury brand will be well discussed on the Internet so do a search for the brand name and if you can't find something like a Cartier Ballon Bleu review or collectors and owners discussing the merits of the brand, it is unlikely to be a true luxury brand. The type of retail outlet that you make your purchase from is as important as the make of the watch. If you know how much a watch is worth do not think that the deal you see on the internet is something that should be trusted. Check out the Internet to see if the manufacturer of the watch you are looking at has a web page, something that many of the fakes will not have. It is getting easier and easier to have a presence on the internet, so even that is something that should be taken lightly before you invest your money.
A person who thinks that they are getting a once in a lifetime deal on a quality timepiece is most likely wasting their money. High quality watches that are handcrafted and made with good materials do not have to be sold at one tenth of their stated value. Many people talk about how much they saved by buying something on sale instead of looking at how much what they bought is actually worth. People get swept up by the idea that they are getting a steal of a deal and stop looking at the obvious clues that something is not right about the product they are buying.
